Footage has emerged of panicked workers hanging on for their lives as their $40 million offshore gas platform sank below stormy waters in the Persian Gulf.

In the video, a row of people can be seen clambering across the giant Iranian-owned structure, trying to escape as it vanishes into the ocean.

An unknown number of people ended up in the water when the oil platform sank below the surface, but there were no reports of casualties.

Iran has called on foreign aid to help pull the 1300-metric-tonne platform from the seabed.

State-owned Pars Oil and Gas Co. Ltd, which was installing the platform when it sank, is investigating what caused the incident last week.

Difficult weather conditions have prevented it from being recovered.ninemsn.com.au
